AI Does Not Fix Identity

1 minute read, by Becky Sandberg

Leadership wants agents. The identity team already knows what those agents are going to inherit.

Most of us have spent years carrying an environment that mostly works. Access granted for a reason nobody wrote down. Roles and groups named after teams that no longer exist, or people who left years ago. A service account holding something up that no one wants to touch. None of it was ever fine. It was survivable, because it moved at human speed and there was usually time to catch it before it mattered.

Agents take that time away.

AI did not create any of this. It shortens the distance between a weak decision and its consequence. Something that sat unnoticed for a year can surface in an afternoon.

That is the idea Series 3 is built on. AI does not fix identity. It exposes it.

The story that opens my book is about an access form that could only grant access and never take it away. Series 3 picks up from there.

Series 1 laid out the model. Series 2 was about putting it in place. This one is about leading it. In it I share stories from the field about where identity gives way: access that never leaves, the accounts nobody hired, the audit everyone passed, the assistant working under someone else's name, and what leaders can do before AI finds those gaps first.

If you have spent years carrying one of those environments, this series is for you.
